It was already the first night back and while everyone in the Gryffindor common room was partying and drinking Teddy Lupin was on his way up to the Astronomy tower. It wasn’t that Teddy didn’t like to party or have a drink, it was quite the opposite. He liked partying and having a good time, and he did drink. Not as much as his best friends, but he could still drink with the best of them. Teddy didn’t like to be drunk, however, he preferred to be at least half-way sober. It wasn’t because of the hangover that usually followed a drunken night, Teddy already had a hangover potion made. He knew his friends would need it the morning after. They always needed it the morning after, plus if he didn’t have the potion they would use it as an excuse to skip class. The reason Teddy liked to be halfway sober was so he could know what happened the night before and keep all of morals. Sad to say it, but his friends usually had no idea – so he’d fill them in at breakfast (if they made it to breakfast).
Teddy shook his head, when he had left the common room Chris was busy snogging some girl that Teddy couldn’t recognize while James was busy flirting with another. He loved his friends, but he felt that sometimes they would never learn how to be responsible. There was more to life than partying and having your way with women. Teddy could honestly say he never snogged anyone just because he was under the influence. He may have had some alcohol in him when he snogged one of his girlfriends, but that was different, they had been dating. Teddy was more of a relationship guy than a hook up guy, most people knew that. Sometimes he got a lot of heat for it, but what could he say? He’d rather be in a relationship and get to know someone than just meeting someone for two seconds before shoving his tongue down her throat.
Right now Teddy was currently single, he was kind of glad. Not that his exgirlfriend hadn’t been lovely, she was indeed. Being single meant he had time to scope out the dating scene, look at all the girls who he hadn’t noticed before. Trying to ‘woo’ them by sending them flowers and taking them on dates. Teddy was a firm believer in the courting process and always wanted to court a girl before he asked her to be his girlfriend. It was a way of showing her he was into her and that he was dedicated. Maybe Teddy was a little old fashioned when it came to that, but he was a romantic – he couldn’t help himself. The ladies seemed to love it, anyhow. But to be honest, Teddy always had his eye on a certain redhead. Victoire Weasley was the one girl Teddy could never manage to tell his feelings too. He had known her all his life and they were very good friends, he just didn’t know how he could ruin their friendship if she didn’t have feelings for him either. Not to mention Teddy couldn’t deal with being rejected by the beautiful Hufflepuff. He had been crushing on the girl since he was eight years old, which was almost ten years. Just thinking about that made Teddy feel as if he were pathetic.
Teddy finally arrived on top of the highest tower in Hogwarts and made his way to the edge, a bottle of Firewhiskey in his hand. He had taken it right before the left the common room. He found the common room to be a little stuffy and decided to come and get some air. What better place to get air from than the Astronomy Tower? Teddy walked towards the towers edge and looked up at the night sky. It would’ve been completely dark if it weren’t for the stars that illuminated the sky. Teddy opened the bottle of Firewhiskey and took a swing. The alcohol burned his throat as it went down, but made his body feel warm and tingly inside. Now, if only he had some good company…

The first night back at Hogwarts was bound to be a memorable one. After the speeches were made, the first years were sorted, and the meals were well settled into the stomach of the students, the opening feast was over and students were slowly making their way back to their common rooms for a good night’s rest...or at least that was what the professors thought. As for the likes of Chris Wood, well, he had other plans up his sleeves. He had three bottles of fire whiskey already pulled out of his trunk before half the Gryffindors made it up the seven levels of the historic school. He didn’t know what the other houses were planning, but he knew the Gryffindor house was never one to decline a sporadic party. With a cheeky grin and a devilish look in his eye, the scruffy seventh year was ready to go. It was going to be a night to remember...or at least a night to be filled in about the next day.
Hours into the night, the music was still blaring, people were still dancing, and Chris, well, Chris had found himself tangled up in the arms of a leggy sixth year name Lisa...or maybe it was Liz, he wasn’t particularly sure. He never was brilliant with names and it usually landed him in a bit of trouble...though not enough he couldn’t smile and charm his way out of. At the moment he wasn’t at liberty to ask the lovely lady as his lips were being occupied.
”Merlin! Leslie! I told you he was mine!”
Leslie, that was it. He knew he was close with the Lisa thing. With a screech and an abrupt pull the girl he was having fun with was ripped out of his reach. Chris looked drunkenly over at another girl who seemed to be in a bit of a tizzy. She began whispering viciously at...Leslie and Chris knew it was better to make an escape while he could. Winking at the on lookers, Chris pushed himself off the couch and darted through a few groups of people. He was about out of it when someone else stopped him to do a line of shots. Chris was never one to refuse. He could basically drink anyone under a table and this was no exception. He finished his line of five shots before the other guy was done his third. He shook his head.
“Nice try, maybe next time you should challenge someone more up to your level...so like a first year or something?” he said with a joking laugh.
He turned his head back to the party, thinking it was safe, but it was then he saw the two girls from moments before. Now, however, they both seemed heated. He saluted the group around him before grabbing a drink and running off.
“Jamesy, cover me!” he called over to his mate who was, of course, flirting with a cute girl in the corner. With that said he dashed through the portrait hole and out into the deserted halls.
How he managed to stumble his way in the dark all the way up to the Astronomy tower was unknown to the seventh year. It was a skill that seven years of groping around a darkened school in the middle of the night half plastered for much of his teen years that set him up for it. As he turned a corner he realized he was far from being alone.
The image of Teddy Lupin and a bottle of Fire Whiskey always made Chris’ heart flutter just slightly. The always level headed Gryffindor usually spent most of his nights laughing at his drunken friends misfortunes...or carrying a half passed out Chris back up to the dorms. Chris owed the kid a lot, if he were to think about it. He probably would be left in a ditch somewhere if Teddy didn’t always swoop in and become the voice of reason in the madness that was their friendship.
“Ohhhhhooohooo!” he snickered as he slid against the side of the wall, “Am I interrupting a secret sexy rendezvous Tedders?”
Taking a last swig from his cup he tossed it onto the ground and smirked a rather hazy, half dopey smile, “ I hope she brings a friend...or maybe a hot sister.”
He smirked again as he pushed the bothersome hair from his eyes. Chris was probably the last person Teddy wanted to see at that moment, but hey, Chris didn’t mind...he went where ever the booze did and at that present moment it was in the grasp of his dear friend Teddy Lupin.

Teddy could hear someone coming up the stairs of the tower. He stood there without worry, knowing that whoever it was would make their presence known soon enough. Teddy just hoped it was one person and not a couple, he didn’t want his peaceful night to be ruined by a horny couple looking for a place to shag. That was of course the worst case scenario. The best would be that it was the lovely Victoire Weasley, Teddy knew he would greatly enjoy her company. Watching the stars in close proximity of the redhead would be romantic – or at least Teddy thought so.
The seventh year let out a sigh, it was only a matter of time before his quiet and peaceful alone time would be ruined. Teddy actually expected it to happen because it was hard for him to find a peaceful moment alone. To be quite honest Teddy was glad he didn’t have much alone time. He loved spending time with people and being around those he cared for. As a child he was always with his grandmother or Harry or the Weasleys. He always figured that they spent extra time with him because his parents were dead. Like trying to make up for the time he didn’t have with his parents by showering him with extra attention and love. Teddy would be lying if he said he didn’t appreciate the love they showed him to make him feel like he fit in and belonged with their family. Maybe that’s why he was such a people person and a sucker for a good conversation.
“Ohhhhhooohooo!” he heard a voice call out. It didn’t even take the Gryffindor five seconds to recognize who that voice belonged to. All Teddy could do was shake his head as a smirk formed on his face and his brown eyes lit up in amusement.
A good conversation could be described in many ways and there were a lot of conversations that would be considered good. But did Teddy believe that a conversation with his drunken best mate would be considered a good conversation? Of course he did, it was his best mate, after all, and if it was one thing about Chris – there was never a dull moment when he was around. Chris was the life of the party, which was good at times and other times made Teddy worry about his sanity and his future. He always felt like he was ages older than his two best friends because he thought about the future while they slacked off.
A laugh escaped Teddy’s lips as he watched Chris slide against the wall. “Yes, actually you are interrupting.” He spoke. “I was just about to get it on with this bottle of Firewhiskey.” Teddy held up the bottle and shook it slightly. He brought the bottle up to his lips before taking another gulp.
At the mentioning of a girl and her hot friend and or sister Teddy raised an eyebrow. “What happened to the girl in the common room?” he wondered, even though he was sure Chris got rid of her. “She wouldn’t put out?” If that was the case, which Teddy was sure it wasn’t, he’d probably give kudos to the girl. Chris had a lot of hookups, which wasn’t really a secret to the Hogwarts student body. For some reason they liked hooking up with him and then being thrown away at the next second. Just like the cup the Chaser had thrown onto the ground after he finished the contents inside.
“Did you want some of my Firewhiskey?” Teddy held up the bottle, knowing Chris wouldn’t refuse the offer of booze. His friend didn’t need any more of it tonight, classes would begin tomorrow and even though he would give Chris a hangover potion, he’d prefer if the Gryffindor could at least make it to the common room on his own tonight instead of having Teddy support him. Carelessly Teddy held the bottle over the ledge of the tower and slowly let it slip from his grasps. He watched as it fell into the darkness and was sure it would break as it crashed down onto the cold hard ground below. Teddy looked over at Chris, a smirk forming on his face. “That’s a long way down.”

The night was perfect. The stars twinkled in the clear sky as the crescent moon shone brightly over all of Hogwarts. The peace and serenity that night brought seemed unmatched by anything. It was no wonder Teddy had escaped the noise of the common room to come and find the solitude of the Astronomy tower. The view from that place really was spectacular. Just as quickly as it had come, the peace was gone. Chris had a tendency of ruining overly sappy or self indulged serene moments, especially when it came to Teddy. It always seemed he popped in just when the skinny seventh year was about to go to bed, or finish a deep thought, or have an intellectual conversation with someone. The dopey smile that lingered on Chris’ lips proved that the boy was only half oblivious to this notion. He let out a hiccupping giggle as Teddy spoke about having a love affair with the Fire Whiskey.
“Oh good choice mate,” He said with a wink. Anyone who knew Chris understood, or at least thought they understood Chris’ relationship with the bottle. It was an intense one full of highs and lows, and in many ways was Chris’ longest standing relationship to date.
“Next time I’d go for something with legs and...you know,” he said with a mischievous grin as he motioned towards his chest with his hand.
Chris and Teddy had been friends for quite some time. They knew each other from the inside out in many ways and shared a bond that was more brotherly than friendly. Along with James Potter, the three made quite a team. While Teddy was by no means ever reserved with the three, he had always had a level of silent responsibility within the confines of the little group. In many ways he was the one the two looked up to, though Chris would never admit it. He had his life on track, he had his priorities, and he made a mean hangover potion.
“You know you make me sound like some kind of common whore with accusations like that,” he added with a playful grin and joking tone.
Chris stumbled a few steps forward as he giggled at Teddy’s next question. He made his way so he was right in front of Teddy, in which he put his hand on his should as if they were going to have a deep, heart to heart conversation.
“Now, let me tell you a secret about the ways of women Tedders,” he said as he turned to look out at the vast sky, “ They’re really like vultures mate—they see something they like and attack. Her friend didn’t take too kindly to her beating her to the punch if you know what I mean.” He nodded as he not so eloquently referred to himself, “ If you haven’t already noticed mate, I’m kind of good looking,” he added not being able to hold in his laughter.
He leaned against the pillar nearest the open portion of the tower while continuing to shake with laughter. Confidence was something Chris was never short of. His words were always wrought with sarcasm but for some reason everyone knew he secretly understood the obvious which oddly only made him more attractive to most girls at Hogwarts. He didn’t understand it really, but as long as he got laid he didn’t much care to be honest.
He bobbed his head slightly as he played a tune from the party in his head. He couldn’t remember all the words of wisdom his drunken self had given Teddy over the years but he knew that many of them involved the opposite sex. It wasn’t as if Teddy was completely inept with women, he just had a different way of handling them than Chris. He didn’t have as many hook-ups and Chris and he did this whole buying flowers, bowing, relationship nonsense Chris would never fully understand. Chris was all about the instant gratification of fun in the here and now and only wished his mate to experience the thrills of being young. His attention was pulled away as Teddy dangled his bottle of Fire Whiskey on the ledge of the tower.
He nodded as Teddy offered it to him, “Thanks mate,” he said as he reached out, but it was just then that the bottle fell from his slackened grip and out of sight.
Chris’ eyes grew wide as he touched his hand to Teddy’s forehead, “ Are you mad?!?” he said incredulously as he looked over Teddy’s shoulder to where the bottle was dropped, “ That was—why would you? AH!”
He shook his head as he let his hand drop and moved over to the ledge. With surprising ease Chris jumped up onto the ledge. He took one elaborate and rather shaky step forwards as he leaned over to look down at the drop. All he could see was darkness.
“Wasting perfectly good alcohol,” he said shaking his head, “Have I taught you nothing?! Well—I guess I’m going to have to go down and get it then.” He leaned farther forward to see how he was going to manoeuvre this.
Chris was always doing stupid, dangerous things while sober. When he was drunk that notion was amplified. At any case these two were in for quite a night.

Teddy briefly wondered how much Chris had to drink. Usually Teddy would count and try to cut his friends off at five bottles, which may seemed like a lot, but it isn’t when they had a bottle in each of their hands and drinking them both at the same time. The alcohol went fast between his friends, but somehow they always found a way to get more as soon as they’ve run out. It made Teddy sad to say that one day he could see Chris as an alcoholic living off of his parents. He would’ve liked to believe that Chris didn’t want that for himself, but it was the path Chris was going down. Teddy knew that this being Chris’ last year at Hogwarts that the boy needed to at least think about his future, Teddy took it upon himself to try and get Chris to at least think about it for more than two seconds. Looking over at Chris as he hiccupped/giggled Teddy knew that he would not be able to talk to the boy about it tonight. It’d be a complete waste of time and he was sure the boy wouldn’t remember it in the morning, anyhow.
“If it’s such a good choice than maybe you should just stick with Firewhiskey, instead of preying on these innocent ladies.” Teddy told him, knowing that Chris probably wouldn’t be able to choose between Firewhiskey and loose women. Maybe he should try to find Chris a serious woman who would make him want to stop drinking as much and who Chris could be faithful too. Teddy shook his head and let out a soft laugh, he didn’t know who would be up for the challenge when it was a good chance it was a losing battle.
The Beater could only laugh at his friend while he motioned to his chest with his hands. Of course Chris would go for leggy big boob women. Nothing at all like personality. “That’s all great, sure. But I’d like to go for someone with an attractive mind as well.” He informed his friend. “Maybe you should look into that,” Teddy knew his words were probably going out Chris’ ear, his mate did not want to hear that so Teddy just shrugged.
“A common whore?” Teddy laughed, did he really make his friend seem as such? He knew Chris was only joking, but he couldn’t help but to wonder…Chris could in reality be considered that but Teddy never personally thought of his friends with such derogative words. “I’ve heard, much to my dismay, that you’re actually better in bed than a common whore.” Teddy clapped his hands together. “Congratulations, mate.”
It was a second later when Teddy stopped clapping that Chris put his hand on his shoulder. Was now really the time for a heart to heart conversation? To be honest, Teddy didn’t expect one. He barely got one when the guy was sober. Oh Merlin, Chris was going to tell him about the ways of women? This could only be good. He tore his eyes off of the seventh year when he followed his gaze to the night’s sky. Teddy shook his head in amusement while Chris laughed after he complimented himself. After six years Teddy was used to his arrogance. “Vultures, eh? And what does that make you, Chrissy?” Teddy cocked his head to the side, waiting for his best mate’s answer. “Though if you were really as great with women as you appear to be, why didn’t you just take them both? Too much for you to handle?”
Chris was always up front with women, they always knew exactly what he wanted from them. For some reason they always gave it to him. Teddy would never understand why a woman would jump into bed with someone she barely knew on a personal level, while knowing that he had been with other women. Probably one right before her, and definitely one right after her. Teddy was more of a one woman kind of guy – he didn’t like to hookup without having some sort of feelings for the girl. He knew that some people probably thought he was more boring than Chris and James for that fact, but Teddy just liked to think he was respectable and thoughtful. Teddy valued women for more than their bodies, but for their mind and what’s in their heart – James and Chris would probably laugh if he ever said that out loud and make some joke of how he was a pansy.
Chris expression to Teddy dropping the Firewhiskey was classic. Teddy tried not to laugh, but couldn’t hold it in. He swatted Chris’ hand off of his forehead. “I’m feeling fine and dandy, actually.” He told the boy in between laughs but stopped when Chris easily jumped onto the ledge. “Come on, what are you doing?” he asked even though he had a general idea. Chris was going to jump to try and get the Firewhiskey that laid broken onto the ground – much like Chris would if he actually jumped.
“Trying to commit suicide over a bottle of Firewhiskey is truly pathetic.” He told his friend, with the realization that his friend truly needed help. “I think you’re mad, and you know what, if you’re going to jump than jump.” Teddy folded his arms over his shoulder. He knew that if Chris jumped, he would jump down after him and summon his broom to rescue the boy. Teddy was glad he was a great flyer or else, if his friend had jumped, he’d probably be going to a funeral. “There’s probably some more Firewhiskey in the common room. A whole bottle to yourself. Oh, and there’s women. Maybe you could see about those two girls and get yourself laid.”

The seventh and final year of school was supposed to be a time of preparation, reflection, and opportunity. It was the last time they would ever be within the confines of the historic school. It was the last time they would really be considered children, and in that, it also meant they had to be prepared to open up a new part of their lives. What opportunities were awarded after these seventeen year olds left where entirely in their hands. It was supposed to be the culmination of seven years of hard work. In the case of Chris Wood, the key words in all of this supposed to be. In the academic field Chris never reached his potential. On no one else’s fault but his own he slid by with a less than minimum effort. He never went to class, he rarely did any actual form of homework, and he found the entire idea of school to be somewhat repulsive. One would have thought hanging around the likes of Teddy Lupin would have rubbed off on Chris for the better, but the rebellious boy was too stuck in his own ways. All he had was Quidditch, and sometimes he wasn’t sure he wanted that.
The game had always been a touchy subject with Chris. His friends knew this better than anyone as they were also his team mates. He had the talent many scouts said would get him to the pros for sure, but it was his attitude that was the problem. It seemed like he was trying to sabotage the only thing he had going for him, and from the actions taken at that very moment, this year was to be no different.
Chris balked at the classic Teddy response for dating. His kind hearted friend had a way to make Chris almost feel cheap with comments such as these.
“You know, I could start looking in the library for a hot Ravenclaw. I’ve always had a thing for the hot librarian type...just so long as she doesn’t make me read...actually, going into that place may be too risky,” he said as he dangled one of his legs out into the night. Balancing on one foot while intoxicated wasn’t exactly the smartest thing to do, but then again it was Chris.
He took a small little bow dangerously over the edge of the ledge he was standing on when Teddy spoke sarcastically of his skills in bed. To Chris’ drunken mind it was an obvious compliment to further inflate his abnormally large ego.
Vultures, eh? And what does that make you, Chrissy? Though if you were really as great with women as you appear to be, why didn’t you just take them both? Too much for you to handle?”
The conversation took a turn and in much of the same fashion so did Chris. He took a blind step backwards, grabbed ahold of the nearest pillar and spun himself around so he was facing Teddy, “ I’m the super hot and sexy meat...duh!” he said with a devilish grin followed by a snicker, “Nothing is too much for me to handle,” he added with a drunken wink as he waved his finger at Teddy, “ I-I=I was being the gentleman and saving the friend for you...because we really need to get you laid.” his voice went down to a whisper, “ You seem a bit frustrated lately,”
He couldn’t help but let out a howling laugh. The only reason for Teddy to be frustrated was due to Chris and James’ antics. How the guy put up with them, especially Chris, for six years was beyond comprehension. He had to be the definition of a best mate.
Again, the conversation turned. Instead of being the typical buzz kill so many expected someone as studious as Teddy to be, he was the exact opposite. He almost egged Chris on to jump after it. Providing the challenge was good sport and Chris was one to always take it. Teddy was in more ways than one just like Chris and James, he just had a better handle on hiding the insanity.
“Is that a dare?” he inquired, “ Because I’ll do it mate, it doesn’t look that far down...” he took a side glance down over the ledge. He could not see the bottom but he shrugged his shoulders, “ But if I do I have no idea how you’re going to top it.”
Doing dares was something Teddy, James, and Chris took rather seriously. IT was like a challenge, who would go the farthest . At least in Chris’ mind it was and he almost made it a priority to always win it. Over the years the dares have gone from stupid to downright dangerous but they didn’t mind. What was life without a bit of a risk anyway?
Teddy was backpedalling as if he predicted Chris’ next course of action. Distracting him with girls and alcohol...wow he was good, Chris almost instantly forgot about the wasted Fire Whiskey sitting at the bottom of the tower.
“Old news mate,” he said, “ Besides I don’t remember either of their names!”
He looked down into the endless night once more, a smile growing on his face. He actually was starting to wonder if he could do it. How far was it really? He could always get summon a broom or something. It was almost like cliff diving, except there was more of a chance of something going wrong.
“But if you want them go for them...got to warn you though, they seem a bit crazy,” he said with a laugh, “Which outside the bed room is never a good thing.”
He shook his head and winked at his friend again. He took a couple steps on the ledge as he moved closer to the other pillar on the other side. He wasn’t as near the edge as before but it was still a bit of a hazard. He liked being up there....if only he could fully remember how he managed to get there...and what tower he was actually on. Good thing Teddy was there. At least there was one of them who could stand without seeing double.
